Help! Body Acne

Dr. Sheilagh calms beach body fears.

Question:  My son is dreading our upcoming beach trip because of body acne.  How can I help him?

Answer:  About 60 million Americans experience some form of acne, and 50% of those also have body acne.  And although he won't be the only one at the beach suffering from breakouts ... it can still feel really isolating.

Here are some things you can do to help:

1.  Avoid hot showers, which can over dry skin and make him even more prone to breakouts.

2.  Make sure he showers daily or after sweating, using a gentle acne-fighting bodywash

3.  If his skin is dry, moisturize face and body directly after showering with a light moisturizer.

4.  Buy non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic sunscreen.  Direct sunlight can worsen hyperpigmentation and scaring left from past breakouts.
